Job Title: Trainee Delivery Driver

Reports To: Shipping Supervisor and Warehouse Manager

Overview

The objective of this position is to provide the successful candidate with the training to obtain the skills and knowledge in driving a PDL truck, in operating industrial warehouse equipment and to ultimately attain a Group 4 Driver’s License.  

The successful candidate must be 25 years old and above; must hold a valid Group 2 Driver’s License, have a positive attitude and strong work ethic, must be punctual, honest, reliable and hardworking and physically fit to lift goods up to 50 lbs.  The incumbent must be a team player and be willing to work with the PDL team to always provide exceptional customer service.  He / she must always be presentable as he / she will be an ambassador for Progressive Distributors Ltd.

This is a Monday through Saturday job; however, flexibility and availability to work holidays and weekends is required.  During the training and after the training has been completed, the job requires to be able to report to work as early as 5am.  Extensive overtime will be required especially during our high season November through April.  Weekly schedule will be provided.  Must be willing to process and learn company systems.  Must speak, read, write, and comprehend English fluently and must be able to do basic computation.  Must present proof of COVID-19 vaccination.

Incomplete submission will not be considered.

The training program will consist of the following: 

1.    On the job mentoring and training by experienced drivers and managers.

2.    Formal driver training programs focused on road safety, professional conduct, community awareness and courtesy while on the road, and operational management of PDL equipment. 

3.    On the job training and class work to prepare for Group 4 Driver’s License testing: 

           a.    Driving a PDL truck:

• Our standard delivery trucks are up to 24ft long 8ft wide and over 60,000lbs with a wide turning angle. 
• Visibility when moving and backing up the truck is limited, and experience from a driver is needed when driving narrow roads and delivering to small delivery areas.
• With all our trucks we have a hydraulic lift gate on the back to help delivery – There is no rider assistance.
• The lift gate is another 6 feet that is used to lower a pallet full of products onto the floor. 
• An electric pallet jack helps the driver on the truck to move the pallets around but again experience is needed to maneuver the pallet jack safely. 
• Moving a pallet full of products around in a tight 8ft space then maneuvering onto a 5ft wide lift gate requires patience and experience.

4.    Standard Driver Work Requirements: 

• Basic mechanics of the trucks
• Delivery routes
• Unloading and delivering product to customers
• Temperature procedure
• PDL proof of delivery systems (POD)
• PDL proof of payments
• Returned items policy
• Food Safety
• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) use 
• Chemical Safety 
• Customer Service
• Cleaning of the delivery trucks daily (clean the driver’s area and the box of the truck)
• Operating industrial warehouse equipment (electric pallet jacks, manual pump pallet jacks, hand trucks): This equipment is very expensive, high tech and controlled by computers.

Rate is KYD $10 per hour.

Once the above requirements and training have been completed, the Trainee will become a full-time delivery driver and will assume the responsibilities of a Delivery Driver and start working by himself. The job requires to drive safely and courteously, while delivering products to an average of 30 stops timely around the Island.  

Duties and responsibilities

1.    Conduct a vehicle inspection before departing the warehouse. Fill out and sign transportation vehicle inspection log and hand into shipping clerk. 
2.    Timely delivery of goods to customers as assigned by the Warehouse Clerk. 
3.    Liaise with Shipping Supervisor with any issues of delivered product.
4.    Collect product from customers as directed by Shipping Supervisor via POD tablet. 
5.    Log all returned goods on POD tablet and sign off upon receipt from customer. 
6.    Return all or any product to warehouse for inspection by supervisor or checker loader ensuring End of Day (EOD) is completed on the POD tablet. 
7.    Load truck / van for delivery when needed.
8.    Follow customer delivery route manifest and time schedule on POD tablet. 
9.    Drive safely and courteously while delivering products within deadlines.
10.    Maintain communication with Shipping Supervisor always notifying any deviations.
11.    Deliver all products to customers checking against POD tablet.
12.    Collect payments from customers against POD when necessary.
13.    Deliver goods and invoice for Little Cayman, or Cayman Brac orders to Thompson Shipping or Cayman Airways. 
14.    Report any accidents or injuries to Supervisor immediately.
15.    Always maintain a clean/tidy and safe vehicle; clean and sanitize the inside of the vehicle at end of day.
16.    Perform any other job-related duties as assigned by Management during the day.
