WHAT'S TRENDING IN SUN PROTECTION?

Top of mind for consumers

PROTECTION FROM THE RAYS

We all know how incredibly hot the sun feels in the Cayman Islands, and it’s not your imagination; we are very close to the equator, where the sun’s rays hit the earth’s surface at the highest angle. Did you know that having five severe sunburns increase your risk of deadly skin cancer by 80%? Many of us know at least one person who has had or has skin cancer, and with rising melanoma and other cancer type cases, protection from the sun should be top of your mind.

SUNSCREEN SAFETY

Sometimes when you’re slathering on the sunscreen and reading the ingredients, it can cause you to wonder if what you’re rubbing into your skin is more hazardous than the sun’s rays! One easy way to select a safer sunscreen is to look for a Reef-Safe or Ocean Friendly sunscreen as they are better for sea life and humans.
Generally, they exclude harsh chemicals such as benzophenones, parabens, and other skin irritants and are mineral-based. Always apply a waterproof sunscreen that is SPF 30 or higher at least 20 minutes before going outside.

PROTECT YOUR SKIN AND YOUTH

Wearing a broad-brimmed sun hat with a brim of 3 inches is an effective way to protect your head, face, neck, and ears from harmful UV rays. The World Health Organization has determined that the continuous exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) produced by the sun has harmful effects on the skin, eyes, and immune system.

LOOKING FOR SHADE

It is always best to avoid the sun's direct rays between 10 am and 4 pm but finding the shade can be challenging when you’re at the beach. So if you're looking to kick back and relax with a good book seaside, invest in a beach umbrella or sunshade and chair that will protect your skin and allow you to enjoy a piece of paradise a little longer and more comfortably.

RASH GUARDS ARE TRENDING

Thankfully as consumer concerns trend, the market tends to find ways to answer those concerns (think Corona Virus and masks!). Many local retailers carry paddle-board suits and rash guards, which offer UV Protection for adults and children. It’s a great option as they provide an extra layer of protection from the sun’s hot rays.

SLIP! SLOP! SLAP! SEEK! SLIDE!

A successful health campaign created by the Cancer Council of Australia helps to remind us of the most effective way to stay "sun smart."

THE GOOD SUN

Though the sun has harmful effects, it is an essential part of all life and provides Vitamin D. The sun ties into our human circadian clock using signals from the environment to avoid a restless night’s sleep. So, get out and enjoy the sun and fresh air safely by incorporating some of the above protective measures into your experience.
